in the midst of instrumental music i find myself thinking of spain and its arid south and a poster of a dali painting i bought for the naked woman tiger pomegranate and their weird interactions. the music is nothing like spain, not even remotely spanish, but i remember how that poster graced my wall during my first year in college then came down when i left and has been rolled up somewhere lost ever since. funny how little things fade into the background, fade until they're a pale gray on a slightly less pale gray wall, but contrast enough that you know they're still there. and that of course took me to the painting of the spanish royal family vasquez did where he's standing painting the king and queen who reflect in the mirror behind him and all the children stand around him looking like midgets and staring out at us. he liked painting people looking at the viewer. he did a huge scene that hangs in the prado in spain where these two armies meet to agree to a truce and amid the jumble of people in armor holding swords and guns and halbreds one or two people, minor elements of the scene, have turned their heads and are staring out at the room, at us, at me. i liked his work better than goya's i think, though i went to spain while still in college and my memory of it isn't very good. just that and argentina's iceberg and britain's wall of water and canada's imax theater and the small folk group underneath playing for all the tourists at the expo in seville. and not getting to spend enough time in the church in toledo. and calamri. and sun.
